Black bear cub, Valles Caldera
Another goshawk survey highlight was coming face-to face with a big cinnamon mama bear with 2 black cubs. I entered neanderthal mode, adrenaline rushing, immediately grabbing a big jagged rock in case it came to that. Luckily she stopped short and I retreated to a safe distance.
August 1 Update
August 1 - Sorry to be out of touch. I've been busy with N. goshawk surveys all summer. Have only found two since June 15. (that's about 1000 miles per Goshawk!) Now we are returning to areas we have surveyed before to see what we might have missed. Photos of a couple of the highlights, an alarming goshawk, and a pair of Common nighthawk chicks. Another highlight; just yesterday I was "charged" by an Abert's squirrel! It came running full-tilt straight towards me when I played the Goshawk tape. It stopped about 10 feet from me and I had the best look ever at this handsome ponderosa dweller. Pure white belly and bushy tail, gray above with some chestnut on its back. Unfortunately no photo.
